Diamond Wedding Anniversary

Ethel and Claud Taylor

We were married at St George’s Church, Lupset, Wakefield on the 24th November 1945.  It was a quiet affair as it was just after the war and clothes and food were still rationed, but ingredients for the cake and material for the wedding dress were provided with a little help from our friends.

Honeymoon

We stayed in a private house on the Southbourne, Overcliffe Drive, Bournemouth.  We were charged £5 each full board.  We have memories of walking on the beach as far as the pier at Bournemouth and then enjoying a tea dance at the Pavilion.  Our exploration of the Bournemouth area had to be by bus or on foot and we were very good at walking in those days. We got to know the beautiful chines, Christchurch and Poole.

Diamond Wedding

We stayed at a smart hotel on the East Cliffe, which had every facility available and we enjoyed a turkey and tinsel holiday.  We re-lived old memories but we were now able to go around by car and see how much places were changed, mostly for the better, but there were so much traffic and it was difficult and expensive to park.  We saw St Peter’s Church, in the middle of the busy shopping centre, where Samuel Robinson Waddelow,  (1860-75) was curate.  We had beautiful flowers and cards including one from the Queen.  In addition, it was a very happy celebration.
